FBI Chemist Forensic Examiner

Working Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Travel: Requires extensive domestic and international travel.

U.S. Citizenship Required; Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance.

Major Duties: Serves as a chemist forensic examiner responsible for planning, coordinating and directing forensic science activities in the field of radiological/nuclear materials. This includes the examination of hazardous chemical materials. Forensic examinations submitted in ongoing criminal and foreign counterintelligence efforts, as well as federal, state and local investigations are highly complex. Forensic examiner interprets requests for examination, and recommends additional examinations to fully exploit the forensic value of the evidence. Serves as point-of-contact to the contributors seeking services, assistance, or guidance in dealing with evidence submitted for examination. Forensic examiner serves as the point of contact for the specialized laboratories that may be conducting analyses on the radiological/nuclear materials on behalf of the FBI, and will provide knowledgeable guidance and assistance to the external testing laboratory. Prepares and furnishes authoritative oral and written reports which convey opinions and findings of the forensic examiner through detailed examinations conducted. Presents necessary testimony in court. Through substantial knowledge of all types of forensic examinations, determines need for additional analyses of evidentiary material. As required, serves as a coordinator or member of a team of examiners in crime scene investigations. Is an authoritative consultant to the FBI and other agencies in responding to inquiries pertaining to examinations and/or requests for testimony. Teaches examination techniques to less experienced examiners in field of expertise and provide training to other federal, state, and local forensic examiners, FBI investigators, and prosecutors. Serves as a senior advisor for the Unit and oversees subordinate technicians. Identifies problems in forensic examinations in the FBI Laboratory as well as in other federal, state, and local crime laboratories. Establishes, directs and coordinates research efforts and presents research findings and newly established procedures to the forensic science community.
